About

In my work, the scenery acts as a visual means through which the imposing interrelation between the engraved parts and the drawing can be expressed. Creating, thus, unique engravings that cannot be compound on the paper, whilst ink gets replaced with charcoal. Point, line and plane make up both the absence and the presence of an element in my work, acting simultaneously as negative and/or positive spaces in the conveyal of volumes and of the natural scenery. Through a game of layers, the absence of the paper’s fibers, that have been removed, becomes the dominant element. The temporary negative space created instantly becomes converted to positive with the layering of charcoal, while the positive figment is the original negative space that is created while engraving the paper.

Areti Skavantzou is an Honors B.A. Visual Arts graduate, with a minor in Psychology, that is pursuing her career as a full-time artist. Her works focus on paper engraving, a technique which is developed during her studies at the Frances Rich School of Fine and Performing Arts, in Greece. Her large scale landscape paper engravings of approx. 2m x 2m (h x w) demonstrated and encapsulate the finesse inherent in the poetic nature of her technique. She plans on pursuing a Master degree in England, on an art school that can facilitate development and further growth of her work.

While pursuing her career as a visual artist she keeps on exploring various subjects that she is quite passionate about such as education, feminism, and human existentialism. Areti is a big believer of  alternative educational systems. Her honors thesis “Democratizing Education through Free Democratic Schools,” reconsiders the function of education in contemporary democracies. She is a recipient of various scholarships and has served as President of the International Honors Society (Jan. – Dec. 2014), as well as Vice-president (2015 – 2016) and President of the Visual Arts Society (2016 – 2017). Areti envisions to further expand on the paper engraving technique, and discover new techniques and ways of art-making, so that her artwork can become an agent for societal change.
